Understanding Rotary Unions

What is a Rotary Union?

A rotary union or swivel joint is a mechanism used to transfer fluid (under pressure or vacuum) from a stationary inlet to a rotating outlet, preserving and isolating the fluid connection. Also referred to as rotary joints, rotary couplings, fluid swivels or swivel joints; rotary unions are engineered to endure a large range of temperatures, pressures and speeds for a variety of conditions and environments.

Rotary unions typically function by connecting to input and securing onto another mechanism while allowing a moving connection to be preserved. Rotary unions are utilized in a wide range of applications; from miniature rotary unions for the semiconductor industry, to large and rugged-duty rotary unions for industrial applications.

Three types of rotating unions.

AIR

Deublin builds reliable rotating unions for high-performance applications where high pressures and high speeds are required. These are categorized by one-channel air unions, low-speed one-channel unions, low-speed multi-channel unions, and dual passage air unions.

COOLANT

Deublin's coolant rotary unions offer many capabilities to reduce overall maintenance costs. The bearingless, coolant rotary union is a compact design with a high RPM due to the elimination of the bearings and reducing the overall cost. Deublin's off-the-shelf rotating unions offer multiple configurations to fit any machining application.

HYDRAULIC OIL

Reliable hydraulic rotary unions for high speed, high-pressure applications are available in a variety of mounting configurations. Hydraulic unions are available in many sizes to fit small spaces but are constructed for harsh environments.

Union pop-off 5/8-18UNF LH.655. Single passage for coolant or MQL. Patented pop-off technology allows unlimited dry running without media pressure. Full-flow design has no obstructions to trap chips or debris. Bearing-supported with threaded rotor for easy installation. Dual ABEC 7 (ISO class P4) angular contact ball bearings (1109) Deep groove ball bearings (902). Labyrinth system and large vents to protect ball bearings. Balanced mechanical seals made from silicon carbide for long life even under difficult operating conditions. Anodized aluminum housing resists corrosion. Stainless steel rotor.




1129-039-301 Rotary Union

Union pop-off M16X1.5LH 18MM. Single passage for coolant or MQL. Patented pop-off technology allows unlimited dry running without media pressure. Pop-off stroke of 0.7-3.0 mm compensates for thermal expansion of spindle during extended operation as well as variations in drawbar position. Full-flow design has no obstructions to trap chips or debris. Balanced mechanical seals made from silicon carbide for long life even under difficult operating conditions. Anodized aluminum housing resists corrosion.





2620-200-252 Rotary Union

Union CLNT/AIR 1/4 NPT 108 FLNG. Two independent passages for applications such as clamping and under clamping, work-piece sensing, and cooling. Balanced mechanical seals for each passage provide long life and reduced torque even at maximum pressure. Closed seals provide continuous containment of media. Dual precision ball bearings for smooth operation. Labyrinth protection for ball bearings. Mounting options are compatible with Deublin 2520 or 1579 series unions.




1129-016-301 Rotary Union

Union pop-off M16X1.5LH 18MM. Single passage for coolant or MQL. Patented pop-off technology allows unlimited dry running without media pressure.
