Patented in 1896 by machinist Neils Chstiensen, the o-ring has played an important part of the machine tool industry over and over again.

Viton O-rings are used in areas where high temperatures and chemicals play an extreme role. They provide excellent resistanace to oxygen, mineral oil, gaskets, synthetic fluid, and many organic chemicals.
Buna O-rings are commonly used with gasoline, crude oil, propane, petroleum oils and water. Seals made with this material are usually found in gearboxes, pumps, shafts, and engines. These O-Rings often serve as a packing or toric joint, which is simply a mechanical gasket creating a seal at the interface.
